COMPLEMENTARIANISM?
The end of

Nexus27: Our topic is complementarianism, and our title deliberately asks a provocative question:
THE END OF COMPLEMENTARIANISM?
(We considered something less provocative, but felt there are questions we need to ask again with fresh seriousness.)
Are there biblical convictions that complementarianism has rightly sought to preserve, but which we are now in danger of losing?
Where has complementarianism captured the Bible’s teaching well, and where might it have failed to capture its full richness?
And there’s another sense of the word end:
what is the purpose of God creating us male and female?
What kind of life together is he calling men and women into?
These questions matter because our churches are navigating both new pressures and old assumptions. We can be tempted either to reshape our convictions for pragmatic reasons or to defend inherited formulations without examining them closely enough.
We don’t want simplistic answers to difficult questions.
But neither do we want complexity, or fear, to stop us listening carefully to what God has said.
And if Scripture challenges some of the assumptions or practices we have inherited under the name complementarianism,
then we need the courage to hear that too.
At Nexus 2027, we want to go back to Scripture together.
We want to test our assumptions and examine our practices.
We want to think carefully about how men and women are called to relate to, serve and take responsibility for one another, and what it means for all of us to belong to Christ together.
One of the great gifts of Nexus has always been the opportunity to open the Scriptures with friends in ministry and challenge one another not to turn aside to the right or to the left.
Our hope and prayer is that Nexus 2027 will help us think more biblically, more deeply and more faithfully about God’s good purposes for men and women—and what it means to live those purposes out together in our churches.

What is Nexus?
Nexus is an evangelical ministry conference, based in Sydney. Our vision is to draw together pastors, trainees, theology students, and other gospel workers to:
refresh and stretch one another theologically,
apply that theology to Christian life and ministry,
build a partnership of fellow-workers in the Lord, and
do so in high-value, convenient, one-day conference.
